Chess is a global game that encourages integrity, inclusion and mutual respect, and contributes to creating an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding between peoples and nations without regard to barriers of language, age, gender, physical ability or social status.

This game therefore offers important opportunities in relation to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including promoting education, gender equality, empowering women and girls, promoting inclusion, tolerance, understanding and respect,

Therefore, the United Nations has designated July 20th of each year as the World Chess Day Celebration because it recognizes that sport, arts and physical activities have the potential to change perceptions and behaviors, break racial and political barriers, and counter discrimination, and thus contribute to the advancement at the local and regional levels.
